Davenport Polar Plunge has most successful year yet

Roughly 100 people took part in the Polar Plunge for the Special Olympics.

With temperatures in the 70s, "plungers" couldn’t have asked for a better day Saturday, October 25 to take a dip at West Lake Park Beach in Davenport.

With 100 plungers and Chicken plungers (participants that are too “chicken” to get into the water), 12 teams, and more than $20,000 raised, LETR Event Coordinator Lindsay Easton said 2014 was their biggest year yet.

All the money raised from the event goes to the 12,000 Special Olympics athletes in Iowa. The money allows them to travel, train, and compete at no cost, Easton said.

Easton said in 2013 the event raised about $15,000, so for its eighth year running, it’s safe to say the Polar Plunge grows each year.

After the plunge, participants got to enjoy a Texas Roadhouse meal and hang out at the warm up party. Prizes were awarded for most money raised by an individual, most money raised online, best Individual Costume, best Team Costume, and most money raised by a Chicken.
