A Cedar Rapids woman says she was shocked to learn her abdominal pain was caused by labor when she didn’t even know she was pregnant.

“I was stunned. It didn’t even seem real,” Misty Beaty told KCRG-TV. “I just sat there, like, ‘You have to be wrong.’”

Beaty said she was surprised because she and her husband, Scott Steele, believed they could not get pregnant after Scott went through extensive chemotherapy and relapses as he battled colorectal cancer for several years. Beaty said she had a history of inconsistent periods, and that she didn’t have weight gain, morning sickness or any other symptoms that might have led her to think she was pregnant.

When Beaty had belly pain Monday evening, October 20, 2014, it became so intense that the couple went to the hospital emergency room.

That’s where a lab test confirmed she was pregnant. As in, “full-term-you-are-in-labor-now,” pregnant.

Ready or not, Misty Beaty gave birth to a son, Briggs.

Friends and relatives were helping them quickly gather diapers, baby clothes and furniture for the new addition.

“I’m still in disbelief,” Beaty said. “Part of me is so excited and I feel so blessed.”
