An online petition was launched in an effort to convince the U.S. Postal Service to put legendary jazz artist Bix Beiderbecke on a stamp.

The online petition had hundreds of signatures by October 20, 2014.  It asks the USPS Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee to create a commemorative stamp honoring Davenport native cornetist, pianist and composer Bix Beiderbecke.

“The committee recommends an average of 25-30 subjects each year for inclusion in the stamp program. When making recommendations, CSAC considers the interests and needs of postal customers, as well as those of the stamp-collecting community,” according to the USPS website.

The committee, which meets quarterly, can then choose whether to submit such a recommendation to the Postmaster General, if the subject meets criteria including a requirement that it represent “extraordinary contributions to American society and culture.”

The Postmaster General would ultimately approve and disapprove the selection and possible stamp design.

The whole process takes about three years.

“The Postal Service welcomes written suggestions for stamp subjects that help portray the diversity of the American experience for a worldwide audience,” the information said.

Nearly 1,800 signatures were collected on a similar petition in 1995, but no action was taken at the USPS, according to QCOnline.

Although there was no official threshold required, organizers hoped to gather at least 1,000 signatures on the current petition, and hoped for thousands more.

The current online petition was to be forwarded to the USPS Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee.  To view or sign the petition, click here.
