Police involved in gunfire exchange during pursuit in Davenport

Shots were fired during a pursuit involving police on the west side of Davenport, Iowa.

Shots were fired during a pursuit involving police on the west side of Davenport, Iowa.

Police were called to the area of River Drive and Sturdevant just before 1 a.m. Friday, October 17, 2014, when a patrol squad reported hearing shots fired.  Moments later, a citizen also reported shots fired in the area.   Officers spotted a silver vehicle they thought might be involved in that incident; the vehicle took off and police followed it.

Police pursued the car to the area of 7th and Marquette where the suspect vehicle crashed into a street sign and a tree, according to a spokesman for the Davenport Police Department.

An officer ordered the occupants out of the suspect car, one passenger got out and ran and then the driver "accelerated backwards, directly toward the officer, striking the front of the squad," the spokesman said.

As he moved to avoid being struck, the officer fired his service weapon into the back window of the suspect car.

"The suspect vehicle continued backing at a high rate of speed, completely crossing Marquette Street and rammed a second squad, then accelerated northbound on Marquette," the spokesman said.

Police pursued the vehicle to the 100 block of South Linwood, where they arrested three people.

One weapon was recovered.  No police officers were hurt.

The name of the police officer involved in the shooting was not yet released.  He was placed on administrative leave, in accordance with department policy.

The Scott County Sheriff's Office will investigate the incident.

The shooting happened just one day after Scott County Attorney Mike Walton, said that Davenport Police officers were justified in the use of deadly force back on September 22, 2014.

In August, police shot and killed a knife-wielding man at a home near Ninth and Gaines.  Alvin Jennings, 61, died that night.  The two officers who both fired on Jennings were cleared of any wrongdoing later on. Friday's incident is the third officer involved shooting in the city, in less than two and a half months.
