A podiatrist from Marshalltown surrendered his medical license and reportedly closed his practice after he allegedly accepted pain medications as partial payment from his patients.

In an emergency order suspending his medical license, the Iowa Board of Podiatry said Dr. Timothy Smith accepted "a portion of the patient's pain medication" instead of charging a co-pay for services.

Smith was reportedly given Narcan and resuscitated after he went to a hospital emergency room August 11, 2014, under the influence of Oxycodone, the order said.  When state investigators interviewed him the next day, Smith denied accepting medication from his patients but later admitted his actions.

"(T)here is a serious and immediate threat to public safety if (Smith) is allowed to continue to practice podiatry," the order said.

The board issued an emergency suspension of Smith's license to practice medicine on August 21, 2014.

In a follow-up order issued October 10, state officials said Smith denies the allegations but he decided to surrender his license to practice medicine to avoid the time and expense of a hearing before the board.  The board accepted the surrendered license as resolution of their allegations against him.

Smith's practice had offices in Marshalltown and Newton.
