For the third time in a month, construction crews have unearthed an item that resulted in a bomb squad response at the Rock Island Arsenal.
Construction crews found a “suspected unexploded ordnance” at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday, October 16, 2014, at the southeast corner of Building 56, which is at the corner of North Avenue and East Street.
Workers at the Arsenal were made aware of the discovery and its location, and police blocked access to the area until the object was removed.
The Quad City Bomb Squad was called to remove the object, and the area was reopened just before 11 a.m.
“It is currently unknown whether the suspected unexploded ordnance is inert or not,” said a statement from Arsenal spokespersons Eric Cramer and Mark Kane.
The bomb squad responded when a Civil-War era cannonball was discovered at the Arsenal Wednesday, October 1, 2014 and when an unexploded ordnance was discovered Monday, September 22, 2014.
