The pilot of a small plane died after he tried to make a second attempt at landing at the Dubuque Municipal airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the crash occurred around 11 p.m. Monday, October 13 about a mile north of the airport.

The single engine Piper PA-46 took off from an airport in Ankeny, Iowa about an hour earlier.   Investigators say the plane crashed after missing its initial approach at the Dubuque Municipal Airport on the city's south side.

Police on the scene say the pilot was the only person in the plane.  The identity of the pilot is not yet released.

No one else was hurt.

Officials at the Dubuque airport say it's not clear if weather played a factor in the crash.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are on the scene and continuing the investigation.
