A driver was injured when the tanker truck he was operating overturned along Interstate 80 near Atkinson, Illinois.

The crash was first reported around 7:15 a.m. Monday, October 13, 2014 on eastbound I-80 at the 38.5 mile marker.

A hazardous materials response was requested when a small leak was discovered in the damaged tanker.  Initial reports indicated the rig was carrying alcohol.

The driver reportedly suffered a head laceration when he was thrown from the vehicle as it overturned.  Information about the severity of his injuries was not yet released.

Weather conditions prevented a MedForce helicopter response, and a ground ambulance took the driver to an area hospital.

Traffic was reportedly slow but able to get by the scene of the wreck.  Police remained at the scene of the crash for more than two hours after it happened.

Eastbound lanes of the interstate were closed at the Annawan exit at 12:45 p.m. so crews could get the rig upright and cleanup could continue.  Traffic was detoured southbound on IL Route 78, then to eastbound U.S. Highway 6 to IL Route 40 north where motorists could re-enter eastbound lanes of I-80.

It was unclear how long the road closure and detour would be in place.
