Two people faced accusations of animal neglect after five malnourished horses were found on their property in northeastern Iowa.

Someone reported possible animal neglect at the Arlington home of Duane Landis, 49, and Margaret Landis, 48, in Fayette County according to a report from KCRG.

“During a search of the residents – with the aid of a local veterinarian – authorities found five horses that were thin and malnourished,” the report said.

During the search Thursday, October 9, 2014, an unspecified number of animal carcasses were also reportedly found on the property.

The couple owned four of the horses, and they relinquished custody of the animals. The fifth horse was reportedly returned to its owner.

Authorities planned to charge Duane and Margaret Landis each with animal neglect and with failure to properly dispose of dead bodies.
