Students at North Scott High School are getting a fresh look at engineering through the use of 3D printers.

In their high-level engineering classes, teachers are finally able to incorporate the 3D printers this year after getting over the initial troubleshooting last year.

"By this point, the students know engineering is something they want to do," said Dan Marceau, who teaches the classes. "More specifically, civil engineering or architecture is probably something they're interested in."

In the classroom on Monday, the students were printing a smaller-scale version of houses they had designed on the computer.

"I'm able to look around at buildings and houses and understand more of what my environment is around me," said TJ Killian, a junior in the class. "Instead of just seeing things, I actually see it for what they are on a more intricate level and I've gained knowledge what I wouldn't have had prior to this class."

"To see a high school kid want to come into class and make their idea [into something] great is a huge reward as a teacher because it's rewarding for the student," said Marceau.

The students receive college credit for the classes that can be transferred to any college. Marceau said in the future, the goal is for students to come up with an idea to design and then print it on their own.
