Pedestrian killed in crash on River Drive in Davenport

An 82-year-old man was reportedly hospitalized after his vehicle was involved in a wreck that killed a pedestrian.

An 82-year-old man was reportedly hospitalized after his vehicle was involved in a wreck that killed a pedestrian.

Police said the crash happened just after 7 a.m. Wednesday, October 8, 2014 on River Drive near Tremont in Davenport, Iowa.

Investigators said the light had just turned green for east-west traffic on River Drive, according to Davenport Police Department Assistant Chief Donald Schaeffer.   The pedestrian stepped into the roadway and was struck by an SUV traveling eastbound in the right-hand lane.

Police at the scene confirmed a pedestrian died of injuries suffered after being struck by a vehicle.   The identity of the pedestrian was not immediately released, as it was withheld pending notification of family.

The eastbound SUV involved in the crash came to rest against a tree.

Police said the driver was an 82-year-old man from Rock Island, Illinois, who was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.  His injuries were not life-threatening, Schaeffer said, and he was expected to be released from the hospital.

Assistant Chief of Police, Don Schaeffer, warns that while the driver wasn't at fault here, there is a reason to be extra cautious on the road right now.

"This is always the time of the year that the sun is directly in the [eyes] of eastbound [drivers], as well as in the evening for the westbound [drivers]," Schaeffer said. "Be patient, slow down, leave a few minutes early so you don't have to push it."
