Three friends are credited with rescuing a 10-point buck that was trapped in a sinkhole east of Decorah, Iowa.

It started when a tractor tire slipped into a sinkhole while haying on a Friday night.  When a neighbor and the landowner, Gary Smorstad, towed the stuck tractor, they discovered a deer in the sinkhole according to information from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

The sinkhole was about four feet wide and ten feet deep.

Smorstad’s son and two friends used rope to get ahold of the buck’s antlers and pull it from the hole.

“He stopped fighting and looked around, like he was grateful,” said Gavin Nimrod, one of the three men involved in the rescue.  “Then he got his legs under him and took off.”

Nimrod, Eric Smorstad and Bryton Meyer also had the foresight prop a phone on the hood of a pickup truck to capture video of the whole rescue.
