Freedom Rock Artist Ray "Bubba" Sorenson planned to spend a week painting the Scott County Freedom Rock to honor those who serve, or have served, in the military.
Sorenson started painting the rock at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, October 2, 2014 along the Mississippi River in LeClaire, Iowa.
Sorenson uses inorganic paints so his images stay on the boulder for a long period of time.
The Scott County Freedom Rock will be a mural that honors veterans and people who served in the military.
"Sorensen paints The Freedom Rock on his own with the tremendous support of family and friends. Sorensen is not commissioned to paint the rock but is able to do so each year with the generous help of donations," said a website dedicated to his Freedom Rock efforts.
Vietnam veterans, who watched Sorenson begin the project, said the mural was important to help keep their story alive.
The Scott County Freedom Rock is the 24th rock that Sorenson painted in Iowa. Sorenson planned to paint one rock in each of Iowa's 99 counties. He says the rock in LeClaire will take between 7 and 10 days to complete.
