Neighbors Say Convenience Store Could Lead to More Violence

Davenport's Committee of the Whole will consider the approval of a liquor license for a convenience store at the corner of 4th and Sturdevant on Wednesday, October 1, 2014.

There are signs up around the business that say, 'No Liquor Store,' even though the potential business owners are calling it a 'convenience store' instead. The Farraj brothers would like to open up the business, called 4th Street Spirits. They own the Central Grocery Store in downtown and the Hilltop Grocery Store on Harrison Street. Ramadan Farraj says he needs to sell liquor at his store to stay afloat, but neighbors are worried about more problems coming to the area, if that's the case.

“This is the wrong place for this business. These guys that want to do it, they may be the best proprietors in the world. Go get the best location, don’t come down and disturb this residential neighborhood,” said Jeffery Weindruch on September 23, 2014.

Neighbors have filed a lawsuit against Davenport's Zoning Board of Adjustments. The ZBA denied the application back in July, but they revised their decision the following month. Wednesday's meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. at Davenport's City Hall. Nothing will be approved.
