For the second time in two weeks, construction workers made a discovery that brought the Bomb Squad to the Rock Island Arsenal.
A Civil-War era cannonball was discovered at the Arsenal Wednesday, October 1, 2014. The discovery prompted the Quad City Bomb Squad to be called to inspect the cannonball. They assessed it to be a solid lead inert cannonball.

“The location of the discovery was not close to any traveled installation roads and no precautionary closures or evacuations were necessary, as the construction workers were at the end of their work day and left the site after the discovery,” said a spokesperson from the Rock Island Arsenal.
The cannonball was removed and is now in the possession of the Rock Island Arsenal-Garrison.
According to a release from the Arsenal, utility and construction workers there are made aware of the possibility that they will come across “suspected unexploded ordnance” and are trained on how to handle such situations.
