Police were forced to close State Street at 26th after work crews hit a gas main in Bettendorf.

The break was reported just before 1:30 p.m., and initial information indicated the line was a main supply line feeding natural gas to the area.

Previous information from the Iowa Department of Transportation indicated utility crews were scheduled to work on State Street between I-74 and I-80 until October 22, 2014.

No initial evacuations or injuries were reported, but city officials later said one business and one home were evacuated as a precaution.

Traffic was restricted and motorists were being forced to detour to avoid State Street between 26th and 28th streets.

City officials later confirmed underground utility crews had struck the gas main.

State Street reopened to traffic just before 3:30 p.m.
