Memorable overhead signs on local highways are part of the Iowa’s efforts to reduce traffic fatalities.

As part of Iowa’s “Zero Fatalities” campaign, overhead and roadside signs along some interstates in Iowa displayed messages that alternated between one that indicated the total traffic deaths so far for 2014, and one that said, “Get your head out of your apps, drive safely.”

“Distracted driving crashes are 100 percent preventable,” said information posted online about the Iowa DOT campaign, “You simply have to focus on driving and put everything else aside.”

The campaign has included a variety of messages on overhead signs, aimed at drawing attention to safety tips and to the number of traffic fatalities for the year in Iowa. Previous messages have included statements such as, “Love your child? Buckle them up,” “Stay alive, don’t text and drive,” “See tracks? Think train” and “Drive hammered, get nailed.”

It’s all part of a larger national strategy called “Toward Zero Deaths,” directed at increasing highway safety across the country.

The messages were launched Monday, September 29, 2014.
