A month of efforts came to a head at an event dedicated to beating ovarian cancer.

During the month of September, National Ovarian Cancer Month, local businesses, media, and community members helped raise awareness of the disease. Teal ribbons, the designated color of ovarian cancer, were displayed in storefronts, at offices, and on clothing.

On Saturday, September 27, 2014 a fundraiser, “A Night to BEAT the BIG O,” was held at the Crow Valley Golf Club.

The event offered food, music, and a raffle.

The group that presented the event, Norma Leah Ovarian Cancer Foundation, was named after two people who battled ovarian cancer. Norma’s daughter Jodie Kavensky said her mom sought to bring attention to the disease.

“My mother said, “Why doesn’t anyone talk about it?” and that was about then years ago and the landscape’s changing,” said Kavensky. “People are starting to talk about it.”

Organizers hoped to raise at least $20,000 from the fundraiser.
