Embattled Rock Island County Board Chairman Phil Banaszek has resigned, effective immediately.
"He has retired from the board and as County chairman," said Shelly Chapman, the board's executive assistant.
"He's tired of being picked at," she added.
Banaszek turned in notice of his retirement to County Clerk Karen Kinney late Wednesday afternoon.
The retirement comes on the eve of a special board meeting called to vote on removing Banaszek as board chairman.
Ken "Moose" Maranda is interim board chairman and will take on chairman duties until the board decides what to do with the position. There was supposed to be an election for a new County Board Chairman in December of this year, but now board members could vote for Maranda taking over the permanent position before then.
