Workers were evacuated as a precaution after a small chemical spill at the ADM corn processing plant in Clinton, Iowa.

“(A) very small amount of ammonium sulfide liquid spilled in the Quality Control Laboratory,” said a statement from plant spokesperson Jackie Anderson. The spill happened at about 9:45 a.m. Thursday, September 18, 2014.

Ammonium sulfide is highly flammable and extended exposure can cause headaches, dizziness and breathing trouble according to chemicalbook.com.  Contact with the substance can cause severe irritation and burns.

“Following company safety procedures, employees evacuated that area of the facility and called in the Clinton Fire Department to manage the cleanup,” Anderson said.

Production at the facility was not interrupted, and no injuries were reported, Anderson said.
