The trial of a retired Moline shop teacher accused of raping a student at Wilson Middle School is expected to go to the jury Thursday.

Henry Pawlus is accused of sexually assaulting an 8th grade student in a closet at Wilson in 2010 while she was working on an after school project.

The alleged victim took the stand Monday in Rock Island.

Pawlus' defense was derailed on Thursday after Judge Mike Meersman ruled a doctor could not testify about the teacher's health issues.

Dr. Robert Milas was asked several questions by the defense in an "offer of proof" that was ultimately denied by Meersman and not allowed to be heard by the jury.

Dr. Milas said he believes Pawlus would not have been physically able to attack the girl because he is too weak and impotent.

"The patient told me he's been impotent for 20 years.  The gentleman has significant cardiac disease, diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, and impotence. I cannot imagine he would have the strength to do that. It's out of my realm of credibility," Milas said.

"I can't categorically say that he did not do that, but I would describe it as extraordinarily unlikely," he said. "Almost a miracle," he added.

Closing arguments and jury instructions are slated for Thursday, then jury deliberations.
