Thomson Prison hosts job fair to fill more than 1,000 positions

The Thomson Correctional Center will be hosting a job fair beginning Tuesday, September 16.

The Thomson Correctional Center will be hosting a job fair beginning Tuesday, September 16.

The Federal Prison located in Thomson Illinois was built in 2001, but after years of sitting empty, the federal government purchased the facility in 2012 for $165 million.

The prison is expected to create 1,100 jobs; federal officials anticipate the prison will alleviate prison crowding.

Less than 20 miles away in Clinton, Iowa, officials predict the job creation will stimulate the entire Clinton region.

"As the largest community adjacent to Thomson, we know that there will be an economic benefit," Nathan Sondgeroth said, the President & CEO of the Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce.

With the possibility of more people moving to the area, some real estate agencies are expecting a boom in the local housing market.

"Right now is a great opportunity for our sellers," said Matthew Brisch, co-owner and broker at Howes & Jefferson real estate.

Brisch said he expects a fraction of those hired at Thomson Prison to purchase a home in Clinton, but said it may not happen immediately.

"There could be a lag time in when the potential buyers actually move to Clinton," Brisch said.

There was no timetable for when the prison would officially open.

The job fair was set for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, September 16; 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 17 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, SEptember 18 at the Thomson Prison.
