A multi-million dollar announcement with national consequences was made in the Quad Cities Monday, September 15, 2014, as Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and Congresswoman Cheri Bustos announced $15.7 million in Conservation Innovation Grants.

Secretary Vilsack and Congresswoman Bustos made the announcement at the Erickson family farm in Milan. The family farm has already been working on soil conservation practices.

The $15.7 million will go to 47 different organizations to help them come up with new conservation and technology approaches.

"Conservation has this extraordinary opportunity. Not only to preserve the soil, which is critically important to this farming operation and every farming operation, also to preserve the quality of water and the quantity that we have available," said Secretary Vilsack.

"The grants would improve soil health, reduce soil erosion, help manage nutrient loss and strategies around those kinds of things," said David Erickson, Vice President of the Illinois Farm Bureau.

Erickson said he is glad Secretary Vilsack made the announcement near the Quad Cities.

"The Quad City area is a great place to showcase conservation practices because farmers have been using conservation practices in this area for a long time," said Erickson.
