Downriver from the QC a nearly $2 billion fertilizer plant is being built. A facility that locals previously said they wanted nothing to do with.

Two years ago, people living in Scott County voiced their opposition to Egyptian company Orascom’s plan to build a fertilizer plant between Davenport and Walcott.  Two years and $100 million in tax breaks later, Orascom is roughly halfway done with the facility that moved down to Lee County.

On Friday, September 12, 2104 Governor Terry Branstad toured that facility that is expected to bring more than 2,000 construction jobs and165 permanent jobs.

“That is the kind of long-term investment in quality jobs that we’re honored and proud to welcome to southeast Iowa,” said Branstad.

There were almost 2,000 construction workers on-site Friday with about 600 more jobs about to go on-line to finish the project in 2015.

After Branstad’s tour, Orascom Construction’s CEO mentioned that the international company may be set to expand, both at its Lee County site and possibly elsewhere in the state.

The facility is expected to be operational in 2015.
