Rock Island County Sheriff Jeff Boyd was expected to make an announcement soon on the future of his term in office, amid an investigation underway by the Illinois Attorney General’s office.
“There is an investigation and it’s in the hands of the Illinois Attorney General’s Public Integrity Office,” said Rock Island County State’s Attorney John McGehee. “I referred it to their attention.”
Boyd, in his first term as the county’s top law enforcement officer, talked briefly with WQAD on Thursday, September 11, 2014, about allegations that had not yet been made public.
“Is this like Jeff Terronez? Absolutely not. But I have put myself out there. There will be some stuff coming up. I’m not allowed to talk about it,” Boyd said.
The sheriff said he had retained a local attorney.
The buzz around the courthouse Thursday was that a resignation could be imminent, but Boyd says he was still considering whether or not to fight the allegations, or to possibly strike a deal of some kind.
