An autopsy was completed on the former Maquoketa City Manager who fired shots during a Jackson County Board of Supervisors meeting in Maquoketa.
Police and witnesses said Francis Gus Glaser, 71, missed his apparent target when he fired a shot at County Assessor Deb Lane as she left the meeting Tuesday morning, September 9, 2014. Glaser had been engaged in a years-long debate with the county over his property taxes.
County Supervisor Larry Buck Koos, 55, pushed a panic button to summon police to the meeting room when he saw Glaser pull the gun from a briefcase. Koos tackled Glaser to the ground after the first shot was fired.
When Glaser was on the ground, the gun went off again. Police said Glaser died after he fired the second shot, and the gun was still in his hand.
An autopsy was performed by the Iowa Medical Examiner’s office the day after the incident.
Dr. Michele Catellier determined the cause of Glaser’s death to be a gunshot wound to the head/neck, according to a statement from Jackson County Sheriff Russ Kettmann.
“Information gathered during the course of the investigation, along with documentation from Francis Glaser suggesting that he was going to commit suicide, which supports the findings of the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office,” the statement said.
