Training offered for attorneys to learn immigration law

Area lawyers are working to ensure young immigrants in and around the QC have access to legal counsel.

Area lawyers are working to ensure young immigrants in and around the QC have access to legal counsel.

On Wednesday, September 10, 2014 Caring Cities Campaign held a conference at the Davenport Police Department’s community room and announced they would offer immigration law training sessions to area attorneys in the fall.

Federal law requires children to have a court hearing to remain in the United States, but getting legal representation is up to them.

“We recognize the rights of the unaccompanied minors is an important issue and we also know that, for example, those who have legal representations, their likelihood of being able to remain in the United States is much higher than those who do not have legal representation,” said Nora Dvorak, Caring Cities Campaign.

The first training session will be held October 17. The training is designed for attorneys who aren’t as familiar with immigration law. Attendees will get an introduction to the law practice and an overview of legal claims unaccompanied minors may present.

Continuing Legal Education credit will be available through the training. Associate professors at the University Of Iowa College Of Law will be leading the training.
