One month after Davenport teen’s death, friends and family hope for justice

One month after a Davenport teen was shot and killed near his home, family and friends are still hoping for justice.

One month after a Davenport teen was shot and killed near his home, family and friends are still hoping for justice.

Wednesday night, around 20 people gathered near the cross and flowers marking the place where Marcus Jones was shot. Friends said the 17-year-old loved music and basketball and was studying for his GED when his life was cut short.

"Marcus was a very energetic, loving, friendly person. He was funny, he liked to play around and play jokes on people," said his mom, Kerri Brinkley.

Shortly after midnight on Sunday, August 10, 2014, Jones was found in a yard in the 500 block of East 13th Street in Davenport. First responders took him to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.

One month later, Jones' family and friends are making sure he won't be forgotten.

"The friends are still involved in this, and they want justice for Marcus. So we're just keeping it in the public and keeping the eyes and ears open to where the name doesn't just fade away," said Brinkley.

They also hope something good can come from such a senseless loss.

"We can't bring Marcus back, but we can definitely take that and fight to do what we can to stop someone else from losing their kid, and having to go through what she had to go through with her family," said Willie Williams, a family friend and organizer of We Care for Our Communities.

"Just stop the violence. Just peace. Why shoot someone, kill someone, over stupid drama, you know? There's no point in that. I just want peace in this neighborhood," said friend Tanisha Blanch.

Davenport Police said they're investigating Jones' death as a homicide, but no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information should call the Davenport Police Department at 563-326-7979.
