9-11 remembrance planned at Rock Island Arsenal

A remembrance ceremony and memorial walk were planned to commemorate the 13th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States.

A remembrance ceremony was planned to commemorate the 13th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States.

The Memorial Walk began at 6:30 a.m. Thursday, September 11, 2014, and the walk route began at the Twin Towers Memorial, across from Memorial Field at the Rock Island Arsenal.   Service members and civilian employees from the Arsenal participated, and each walker carried a bundle of American flags which will were placed in the field near the memorial.  A total of 9,777 flags were placed at the memorial in honor of Americans who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks and during the ongoing War on Terror.

The Remembrance Ceremony, set for 2 p.m. September 11, will also take place at the Twin Towers Memorial.  Col. William Krahling, Distribution Management Center commander at the Arsenal, is the scheduled guest speaker for the ceremony.  A wreath laying and playing of "Taps" were also planned.

The Remembrance Ceremony is open to the public.
