Mother says son’s ashes and urn stolen from her home

A Davenport woman and her family are devastated after an urn carrying their family member's ashes was stolen from their apartment over the weekend.

On Sunday, September 7, 2014, Brenda Duffie came back home from an out-of-town trip, when she realized her apartment in Davenport's Hilltop neighborhood had been broken into.

"When I got in the first thing I noticed was that the pillowcase was off my pillow," Duffie said. "As soon as I got to the living room I just saw the window wide open, no screen on it or anything."

Duffie said she immediately called the police and started going over what was missing from her home. Along with her new big screen TV and iPod dock, her son's urn holding his ashes had been stolen.

Matthew Duffie died in 2008. His family had been waiting to spread his ashes until they felt they were ready, they planned on spreading them sometime this year.

"I don't understand how this could happen or why anybody would do this," said Teri Duffie, Brenda's daughter. "To think that his remains are in an alley or in a dumpster somewhere, it's just almost unbearable."

The Duffie's say the urn probably looked like a jewelry box to the thieves. It's made of red, cherry wood and has gold trim along the edges with a gold lock on the front.

They hope that once the thieves realize that it contained Matthew's ashes, they will have the decency to return it.

"I'm just kind of hoping that maybe someone has a heart and leaves it on my steps here one night or something. Because once they see what it is, I can't imagine they would just toss it," said Brenda Duffie.

"To think that his remains are in an alley or in a dumpster somewhere it's just almost unbearable," Teri Duffie said.
The Duffies plan on going door to door in that neighborhood to see if anyone knows about the robbery and they will post flyers with pictures of the urn on the street.
