Prized motorcycles that were stolen from a Davenport man’s garage were found, in pieces, in a garage on the east side of the city.

David Ford said he got a message Tuesday, August 12, 2014 that someone kicked in a door and stole three motorcycles, along with accessories and spare keys, from his garage off Sheridan Street in Davenport.  He valued the stolen property between $12,000 and $18,000.

One of the motorcycles belonged to his brother who is a Marine on active duty overseas.

“I want these men to know that they stole from a man who is defending their freedom,” Ford said in an open letter he posted online.

One of the bikes was found the week after the thefts were reported. Two weeks later, the other two motorcycles were found, in a garage on the east side of Davenport.

All three of the motorcycles were stripped and in pieces. When the first one was found, its red paint had been covered with a coat of silver.

The motorcycles that belonged to Ford and his brother were found Thursday, September 4. A stolen car and a stolen moped were also found, Ford said.

“The good news is that the Davenport Police know who’s responsible for the theft and will handle business and rest assured I’ll be present with reminders of the crime whenever possible,” Ford said in a Facebook update.

A tip led police to the stolen property.

“The lesson for everyone else is to make sure that you are aware of the people you know and be cautious of those that you meet. Take an extra minute to make sure your valuables are cataloged, secured, and you have adequate locks on your doors and windows,” Ford said.

Ford said he hoped criminals would understand that “hard working folks won’t tolerate this, and through modern day social media, they WILL be caught.”
