A Davenport couple awoke to a naked man in their bedroom Tuesday morning around 2 a.m., police said.

According to police, Paul Schmertmann, 48, entered the home through an unlocked front door and proceeded to touch the woman while her boyfriend was sleeping next to her. The woman's son was also in the house.

Once the woman awoke, police said she, her boyfriend and son locked themselves in the bathroom and dialed 911.

Captain Dale Sievert of the Davenport Police Department said crimes like this one can be avoided by one simple step.

"Lock the doors to your home and your car," Sievert said in an interview with News 8 on Wednesday. "I think so many crimes could be prevented if people would do that."

As of Wednesday, September 3, Schmertmann was being held in the Scott County Jail on a $10,000 bond.

Police charged Schmertmann with indecent exposure and assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, both misdemeanors.

He's also being charged with second-degree burglary, a Class C felony.
