More than two million bean bag chairs were recalled after two children reportedly suffocated and died when they got inside the chairs.

“The zippers on the bean bag chairs can be opened and children can then crawl inside, get trapped and suffocate or choke on the bean bag chair’s foam beads,” said a statement from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Non-refillable bean bag chairs are supposed to have closed and permanently disabled zippers.

A 13-year-old boy from Texas and a three-year-old girl from Kentucky each died when they inhaled foam beads from an Ace Bayou Corp. bean bag chair.  In both cases, the children were found inside the chairs.

Ace Bayou has recalled the bean bag chairs, which were sold before July 2013 in stores and online by Walmart, Walmart.com, Amazon.com, Wayfair, School Specialty, Bon-Ton, Meijer and Pamida retailers.   The chairs retailed for between $30 and $100.

The recalled chairs have two zippers that can be opened; one zipper is on the exterior cover and the other is directly beneath that zipper.  The recalled chairs were sold in a variety of colors and fabrics; round chairs were sold in 30-, 32- and 40-inch sizes and L-shaped bean bag chairs were 18 inches wide by 30 inches deep by 30 inches high.

A tag that reads “ACE BAYOU CORP” was sewn into the chair’s cover seam.

Ace Bayou is offering a free repair kit to permanently disable the zippers to they cannot be opened.
