Nine years after category three Hurricane Katrina made landfall, families share their stories.
“When the levees broke, that’s when the catastrophe hit,” said one survivor.
One woman said people were being shipped to seperate states and nobody was able to tell families where their loved ones had been sent.
“A plane came and picked us up and said they’ll be back in 25 minutes to get the parents, and it never came,” recalled Gabrielle Alexander.
The Vice President of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children said the Department of Justice asked the Center to help reunite the thousands of missing children with their families. The center spearheaded a search for the displaced children by establishing a hotline and setting up a call center in Virginia. People from different agencies were called in to come help with the search project.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita 5,192 cases of displaced children were resolved.
