Convicted sex offender faces new charges in Henry County

A registered sex offender from Geneseo faces several new charges after he was arrested in connection with an investigation in Henry County.

Court records showed Steven A Schmidt, now 32, served three years in prison plus four years on probation, in addition to being required to register as a sex offender, after he pleaded guilty to two felony counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a victim under the age of 13.  The charges were filed in Bureau County in 2003.

After an investigation that began August 18, 2014, police say Schmidt faces new charges in Henry County, Illinois.

Schmidt was arrested Tuesday, August 26, 2014, and he was formally charged with failure to report as a sex offender, sex offender communicating with a minor, grooming, indecent solicitation of a minor, solicitation to meet a child and traveling to meet a minor.  The charges are all felonies.

Schmidt was held in the Henry County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bond.
