Fire at house on 12th Street in Rock Island 8-27-14

A firefighter was injured when he fell through a stairway as he fought fire at a vacant home in Rock Island.

Firefighters were on their way to a medical call at Friendship Manor when they noticed smoke in the area around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 27, 2014.

They arrived to find the second floor of a two-story house was on fire in the 2200 block of 12th Street.

The fire traveled through walls on the first and second floors, and into the attic, of the home.  Firefighters said their access was limited because the fire damaged a stairway inside the house.

A firefighter was treated at the scene of the fire for injuries he suffered when he fell through a stairway.

The house was for sale and not occupied.

Damage was estimated between $70,000 and $80,000.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
