Man identified after he drowns in Sperry pond

A Burlington man was pronounced dead after his body was found in a pond in rural Sperry, Iowa.

A Burlington man was pronounced dead after his body was found in a pond in rural Sperry, Iowa.

The 69-year-old man was reportedly discovered in a pond in the 11500 block of 180th Street in Des Moines County on Monday, August 25, 2014.  Firefighters from Mediapolis pulled the man from the water.

The man was taken by ambulance to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man’s identity was not immediately released.

Police later identified him as Richard Duane Dowell of Burlington, Iowa.

“Dowell had stopped to see a friend at the address on 180th Street and entered the pond to clean off, but did not resurface,” said Des Moines county Sheriff’s Office Deputy Adam Plein.

An autopsy was planned for Mr. Dowell.
