A local effort is underway to raise money for ALS - no ice bucket required.

On Saturday, August 23rd, 2014, the 2nd Annual Quad Cities Walk to Defeat ALS was scheduled to take place in Davenport. However, Mother Nature had different plans.

Still, Representatives from the ALS Association's Iowa Chapter say the were able to reach their financial goal thanks, in part, to the Ice Bucket Challenge that's become a nationwide phenomenon.

"As of yesterday morning, they raised $20,000," said Sarah Lettow. "This morning, when I looked they raised $28,000, so I think we're going to surpass even more than we did last year, which is awesome."

Last year, Lettow said they raised $30,000.

"The funds that we've raised is probably contributing to the Ice Bucket Challenge, but all the funds - no matter if it's through the Ice Bucket Challenge or through the walk - goes to support local services that we provide to Iowans affected by ALS," said Abigail Costigan.

The ALS Association's Iowa Chapter also helps Quad City patients who live in Illinois.

Representative say if you are participating in the Ice Bucket Challenge or want to donate to ALS, go through the local website so all the money stays in the QCA.

As of August 23rd, 2014, the national ALS Association says it's received $62.5 million in donations compared to $2.4 million during the same period last year.
