Three men were arrested following a chase that “wound through” Whiteside County.

On Wednesday, August 20, 2014 a Sterling Police Officer attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle. The vehicle did not stop, which started a pursuit that went through Sterling, Rock Falls, and Whiteside County, according to a spokesperson from the Sterling Police Department.

Police said stop sticks were set up near County Line and Archer Road, which ended the chase. Andre Peat, 24, Robert Patterson, 27, and Lavelle Sykes, 26, fled from the car, but were later arrested.

A small handgun was found in a cornfield during a K9 track of Peat, according to Sterling Police.

According to a statement from the Whiteside County Sheriff's Office, a Sheriff's Deputy discharged his weapon at the vehicle "after narrowly avoiding being run down." That deputy was placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol, pending the outcome of an investigation by the Whiteside County State's Attorney.

According to the Sterling Police, Peat’s charges include unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, obstructing/resisting a peace officer, and numerous traffic violations. He also had outstanding arrest warrants from Lee County and Ogle County.

Police said Patterson and Sykes were charged with obstructing/resisting a peace officer. Additionally, Patterson had an outstanding arrest warrant out of Lee County.
