Galesburg teachers striking with no pay

As they move into week two of the strike, Galesburg teachers will soon be on the picket line with no pay.

As they move into week two of the strike, Galesburg teachers face the picket line with no pay.

Starting Friday, August 22 Galesburg teachers will stop receiving paychecks from the Galesburg School District. While they wait for a contract agreement, however, they have the opportunity to apply for a loan through a federal credit union.

“The loans are not available until after you've missed a paycheck and you've been out on strike for 10 working days,” said GEA spokesperson Tammi Qualls. “So on Wednesday will be the first day that we could receive pay from a loan.”

The money doesn’t have to be paid back until six months after the strike ends.

Discussions between teachers and the school board stalled Wednesday, August 20, 2014 with no deal reached. Negotiations can resume Tuesday, August 26.
