Live electrical lines posed threat to Rock Island firefighters battling a blazing one-and-a-half story home.

At nearly almost 2 a.m. Tuesday, August 19, 2014 a home in the 1500 block of 25th Street was reported on fire.

Rock Island Police and fire crews arrived to find heavy fire coming from the back of the home and heavy smoke coming from the front.

A spokesperson from the Rock Island Fire Department said two hoselines were used and crews attacked from the inside, using a hoseline to protect the north side of the home. Firefighters had to contend with downed live electrical lines that had burnt through in the back yard. MidAmerican Energy came to eliminate the hazard.

“It took crews a while to get the fire under control due to it extending into the basement and into the 2nd floor of the home,” said a Rock Island Fire Department spokesperson.

The resident of the home escaped, after being alerted by a smoke detector. A department spokesperson said he did have some slight smoke inhalation but refused medical treatment.

The home sustained heavy damage on the first floor kitchen area and heavy smoke damage throughout the rest.

Fire damage was estimated at $60,000-$70,000. The cause is still under investigation.
