Dozens of people gathered for a rally in front of the Irish immigrant statue on the corner of Harrison and West 2nd Street in Davenport on Sunday, August 17.

The peaceful rally, called Love Without Borders, was put on by local faith leaders to encourage hospitality towards child refugees caught in the U.S. border crisis.

"We know from the past that this country hasn't always been welcoming to immigrants," said Reverend Rich Hendricks from the Metropolitan Community Church of the Quad Cities. "What we want to do is encourage the community to be able to speak from their faith experience and welcome the stranger."

"I think that there is room in Davenport to host a small fraction of the kids that are coming across the border," said Pastor Clark Olson-Smith from All Saints Lutheran Church.

Mayor Bill Gluba spoke at the rally, thanking people for showing support through their faith.

"They are not illegal. These are children whose country is falling apart, these parents can not provide for them. I think that we can help," said a rally attendee, Bev Wilt.

Rally leaders encouraged supporters to donate money towards relief funds and write to their elected officials to help child refugees.
