Rainforest-themed exhibit opens at Niabi Zoo

A new exhibit featuring a sloth and two tamarins opened at Niabi Zoo.

A new exhibit featuring a sloth and two tamarins opened at Niabi Zoo.

Grants and fundraising paid for the $93,000 indoor rainforest-themed animal exhibit in the zoo's Jungle Trek Discovery Center.

The new exhibit is meant to help zoo visitors learn about the importance of the rainforest and why it should be protected, said Zoo Director Marc Heinzman.

A thin wire mesh is all that separates animals in the exhibit from zoo visitors.

The exhibit features live plants in addition to a Linne's Two-Toed Sloth, which is one of the slowest animals on the planet, and a pair of critically-endangered Cotton-Top Tamarins, which are one of the smallest species of primates in the world.
