Iowa woman accused of stealing motorized grocery cart

Police said they pulled over a Waterloo woman as she rode a $2,500 motorized grocery cart home from Hy-Vee.

Police said they pulled over a Waterloo woman as she rode a $2,500 motorized grocery cart home from Hy-Vee.

Julie Briggs, 49, was two miles from the store when she was pulled over at about noon Monday, August 11, 2014, according to the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.

Passing vehicles were reportedly swerving around her as Briggs drove the blue Cart Mart XTI which has a top speed of less than five miles per hour.

Hy-Vee officials reportedly denied Briggs’ claim that store workers told her she could borrow the cart because she did not have a ride home.  She lives about four miles from the store.

The cart was valued at $2,500.

Briggs was arrested and charged with felony second-degree theft. Court records showed she was released from the Black Hawk County Jail after posting bond.
