Davenport Police say two officers  shot to death a suspect who apparently lunged at the officers with a knife inside a home late Wednesday night, August 13, 2014.

The suspect later died at Genesis Medical Center's east campus.  The two officers are on administrative leave during the investigation into the shooting.

The name of the suspect and the two officers are being withheld by police.

In a prepared statement, Davenport's Assistant Chief of Police Donald Schaeffer says officers were called to a home at 602 West Ninth Street at 10:38 p.m. where a man was reportedly threatening another person with a knife.

Police say the person who called for help was barricaded inside a bedroom with the suspect beating on the door outside.

Davenport Police say the two officers entered the home, confronted the suspect, and ordered him to stop.

When he wouldn't, the police statement says the suspect "came at police officers" who fired their guns injuring him.

He was treated at the scene but later died at the hospital.

Davenport Police says it's the department's protocol to have outside agencies investigate shootings involving its officers.  The Scott County Sheriff's Department and the Iowa Department of Public Safety will conduct the investigation.
Here is the full statement issued by Davenport Police early Thursday morning, August 14:

On August 13, 2014 at approximately 10:38 PM the Davenport Police Department was dispatched to 602 W. 9th Street, Davenport, reference to an individual threatening another individual with a knife.  Prior to the Police Officers arriving, they were advised that the caller had barricaded himself in his bedroom and the man with the knife was beating on the bedroom door.  Upon arrival, the Police Officers were able to make entry into the house and were immediately confronted by the individual with the knife.  The individual failed to comply to verbal commands to stop, came at the Police Officers and consequently both Officers discharged their duty weapons.  The individual was given medical treatment at the scene and then transported to Genesis East Medical Center and subsequently died as a result of injuries sustained in the shooting.

The names of the two Police Officers involved in the incident are not being released at this time, out of courtesy of notification to their families first.  The name of the deceased individual is not being released at this time as well, pending notification of his family.  Both Police Officers have been placed on Administrative Leave as directed by Department policy.

As a Davenport Police Department protocol, the Scott County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Department of Public Safety, Division of Criminal Investigation, were notified and will investigate the incident.  All further inquiries on this incident should be directed to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office.
