Two people were hospitalized, and two Florida men were arrested, as part of a series of shootings and a car fire reported in Burlington, Iowa.
Police said their investigation started when officers were sent to a reported shooting in the parking lot of Fun City just after 1:30 a.m. Sunday, August 10, 2014. Two people were shot in the upper body; both victims were taken to a local hospital.
Less than 20 minutes later, police were sent to investigate a drive-by shooting reported in the 200 block of Hayes Street. Several vehicles and apartments were hit by bullets in that area.
About two hours later, police were sent to the Howard Johnson hotel, at 2759 Mt Pleasant Street, when someone reported seeing a person with a gun. That's where police found and arrested 26-year-old Donald Watkins and 30-year-old Virgil Griggs, both of Miami, Florida.
Investigators said Watkins and Griggs had an altercation with another group at Fun City, and that Watkins allegedly shot two people there.
The two men are accused of committing the Hayes Street drive-by shooting, and then taking their getaway car to Oak and Ashmun where they allegedly set the car on fire.
Both men were charged with second-degree arson and intimidation with a dangerous weapon. Watkins was also charged with two counts of willful injury.
Watkins and Griggs were held in the Des Moines County Jail. Griggs was released after he posted bond. Watkins' bond was raised to $200,000 cash, a police spokesman said.
