Iowa State University and leaders in Des Moines joined forces to submit bids to host the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

This is the first time Des Moines has partnered with Iowa State University to offer to co-host the tournament.

“We are confident—through the collaborative effort of the Local Organizing Committee—all the participating institutions, student-athletes and attendees would experience a first-class event featuring sellout crowds and excellent facilities,” said Iowa State University Athletic Director Jamie Pollard.

The city and the university joined with Global Spectrum, which manages Wells Fargo Arena at the Iowa Events Center, in submitting the bid, according to the Greater Des Moines Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Des Moines will host the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Regional Championship in December 2015. Des Moines hosted the NCAA Division I Wrestling National Championships in 2013, the Division I Women’s Basketball Regional Championships in 2012 and the Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 2008, 2011 and 2012.

Houston, Texas will host the men’s final four in 2016 according to the NCAA. The preliminary rounds for the 2016, 2017 and 2018 men’s basketball tournaments will be announced in November 2014, the NCAA said.
