A seven-year-old girl has died after she and two others, all from Amboy, Ilinois, were thrown from an ATV that hit a deer on a Lee County roadway.

A spokesperson from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said on Sunday, August 3, 2014 a 2011 Suzuki Kingquad hit a deer on Sublette Road, west of LaMoille Road. The impact caused the ATV to roll into a ditch, throwing all three occupants from the vehicle.

Police said 34-year-old Brian Dees was driving the vehicle. Seven-year-old Makenzie Rutherford was sitting in front of Dees and 26-year-old Cassandra Gray was sitting behind him. All three were taken to an area hospital and Makenzie was later flown to another hospital in critical condition.

On Tuesday morning, August 5, authorities said Makenzie had passed away.

Dees was cited for operating an ATV on the roadway. None of the occupants were wearing helmets, police say.
