The World’s Largest Catsup Bottle, located along Illinois Route 159 in a town just east of St. Louis, was up for sale.

The iconic bottle-shaped water tower, and the factory below it, went on the market Monday, July 21, 2014, according to our sister station KTVI.

A website dedicated to the bottle said the 170-foot water tower was built in Collinsville, Illinois, in 1949 and it was restored and saved from demolition in 1995. It was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, the site said.

It was presumed that the historic status would obligate any buyer to preserve the bottle.

Posts to a Facebook page dedicated to the bottle said the bottle has been privately owned since the early 1990s and it is not owned by the City of Collinsville or by the non-profit World’s Largest Catsup Bottle, Inc.

The asking price was set at a half-million dollars.
