Drug charges against an elderly couple have been dropped in a controversial marijuana case in Scott County.

Chuck and Dottie Mackenzie were charged with hosting a drug house after deputies raided their home in Eldridge last year and found pot plants inside.

The couple's son Ben and his wife Loretta were also charged in the raid and convicted at trial last week.

"It was insane. We weren't bothering anybody. We were letting Ben treat his cancer," said Mrs. Mackenzie.

Ben Mackenzie suffers from a rare form of cancer and says he used the oil and juice from the cannabis to treat the disease.

"This is an herb that God created with tremendous healing properties. sSo many people need it desperately," she said.

The two say they have never smoked marijuana but allowed their son to grow it in their home because it had slowed down the growth of his tumors.

They say they are now advocates of medical marijuana and says Iowa law needs to change.
